Challenges in AI Policymaking, by Charmaine Ng, Director of Digital Policy (Schneider Electric) and Future of Tech Policy Council Member (World Economic Forum) | While not specific to AI, the oft-repeated refrain is that technology-related legislation lags behind the development of technology, and that policymakers need to do better, faster.
With emerging technology like AI, traditional methods of policymaking fail us. The rapid speed at which the technology develops outpaces the slower speed at which policymakers are able to properly grasp its potential benefits and risks, and by extension, what and how to regulate — even before we account for often-lengthy legislative processes.
Charmaine argues for an alternative method of policymaking: agile governance, where policy development is no longer limited to governments but rather is an increasingly multi-stakeholder effort. |
