About this event

We have 2 excellent guest speakers joining us to share their knowledge on VUI Design and Development.

Jonathan Bloom (Googler)
and
Allen Firstenberg (Google Developer Expert)

Jonathan Bloom is a Voice User Interface Designer working on Google Assistant. Before Google, he worked as UX Research Lead and Voice User Interface Designer for Jibo, the social robotics company. He also spent time as Senior Voice User Interface Manager for Nuance Communications, where he sat on Nuance’s Innovation Steering Committee. He has designed both graphic and speech interfaces for social robots, IVR’s, dictation software, automotive, and mobile applications. Jon lives in New Jersey and works out of Google's New York office. He holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from the New School Graduate Faculty. Jon is also a husband, father of two, self-published fiction author, black belt in Isshinryu karate, and a lousy bass player in a "dad band

By day, Allen is a professional software developer and consultant, helping clients understand how they can use technology to make their work easier and their customers happier. But his not-so-secret identity is as a Google Developer Expert for the Assistant - helping developers make awesome Actions by creating new tools, such as the multivocal library, answering questions on Stack Overflow, and doing presentations... kinda like this one. In his lack of spare time he likes photography and science fiction.

Join us for an overview and discussion on how to plan, design and build an Assistant app followed by and code labs where we'll build an Assistant App together.

If you have an app you are working on and would like to share it, or you would like to sponsor the event, please contact the organizers.

Jonathan Bloom: Designing Exceptional Conversations

Good design is not just about making products that look and sound good. It’s about making products that people find useful and usable. This is as much the case for the new age of voice-first products as it is for products with more traditional interfaces. In this talk, we’ll discuss what Conversation Design is, and the steps you can easily take to optimize the conversations your customers have with your products.

Allen Firstenberg: Take Action! Building for the Google Assistant

Now that you know what a good conversation sounds like, Allen will discuss how to turn this into a great Action. Using tools such as Dialogflow and the Actions on Google library, you'll learn what you need to know to start developing your first Action for the Google Assistant. Afterwards, you'll be able to put this into practice with the Codelabs, and then build (and publish!) your first Action.
