About this event

Hands-On Vertex AI & Generative AI App Building Workshop at Rajalakshmi Engineering College

Overview:

On 25th October from 3-5pm, the Google Developer Groups (GDG) On Campus at Rajalakshmi Engineering College (REC) successfully hosted a hands-on workshop focused on Vertex AI and generative AI applications. The event attracted around 100 participants, including freshmen through final-year students, eager to deepen their understanding of machine learning and cloud technology. Led by our esteemed AI leads, Ashwin JD and Daniel Das, the workshop emphasized practical learning through interactive sessions, enabling students to gain valuable skills in Python SDK, prompt design, and app development using Gemini and Streamlit.

Event Objectives:

The primary goal of the workshop was to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to develop generative AI applications using Google’s Vertex AI platform. Participants were introduced to the concepts of prompt design and how to leverage Python SDK for AI applications, fostering an understanding of machine learning fundamentals. The workshop aimed to create an engaging learning environment where students could collaborate, ask questions, and work on projects that would enhance their coding and problem-solving skills.

Structure of the Workshop:

The workshop was structured to maximize hands-on engagement and included a blend of presentations, coding sessions, and collaborative projects. Over the course of the event, participants were guided through several key topics and activities:

1. Introduction to Vertex AI:

The workshop kicked off with an overview of Google Cloud’s Vertex AI. Ashwin JD and Daniel Das provided insights into the platform’s capabilities, its significance in the AI landscape, and how it streamlines the development of machine learning models. This session set the stage for the practical applications that followed.

2. Hands-On Training with Python SDK:

Participants received step-by-step guidance on how to use the Python SDK to interact with Vertex AI. This included installation instructions, configuration steps, and examples of how to implement various functionalities within their own projects. Students were encouraged to experiment with different features, fostering an environment of exploration and learning.

3. Prompt Design Principles:

A critical aspect of developing generative AI applications is understanding prompt design. The workshop included a dedicated session on this topic, where participants learned how to craft effective prompts that elicit desired responses from AI models. Ashwin and Daniel shared best practices, examples, and real-world applications to illustrate the importance of prompt design in AI development.

4. Building Generative AI Apps with Gemini and Streamlit:

The workshop culminated in a hands-on project where students worked in teams to build generative AI applications using Gemini and Streamlit. Participants applied the concepts learned throughout the workshop to create interactive web applications that showcased the capabilities of generative AI. This project not only solidified their understanding but also allowed them to demonstrate their newfound skills in a practical context.

5. Collaboration and Feedback Sessions:

Throughout the workshop, collaborative activities were integrated into the schedule. Students worked in small groups, encouraging peer learning and knowledge sharing. Feedback sessions provided opportunities for participants to present their projects and receive constructive input from mentors and fellow students, further enhancing their learning experience.

6. Fun Elements and Community Building:

To foster a sense of community, the workshop included fun elements such as icebreaker activities, team-building exercises, and informal networking breaks. These activities not only made the event enjoyable but also helped participants connect with each other, promoting a collaborative spirit that extended beyond the workshop.

Participant Feedback and Outcomes:

The feedback received from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Many students expressed appreciation for the hands-on approach of the workshop, stating that it significantly improved their understanding of AI concepts and practical skills. Participants noted the engaging format and collaborative atmosphere as key highlights of their experience.

The event successfully achieved its objectives, with many students completing their projects and gaining confidence in using Vertex AI and Python SDK. Several participants reported feeling better prepared for internships and career opportunities in tech due to the skills and knowledge they acquired during the workshop.

Conclusion:

The Hands-On Vertex AI & Generative AI App Building Workshop at Rajalakshmi Engineering College was a resounding success, marking a significant milestone in the educational journey of many students. By providing a platform for practical learning and collaboration, GDG On Campus REC has reinforced its commitment to fostering a thriving community of aspiring tech professionals. This workshop not only empowered students with essential skills in AI but also laid the groundwork for future initiatives aimed at enhancing tech literacy and innovation within the college community.

As we move forward, GDG On Campus REC looks to build on this success, organizing more workshops and events that continue to inspire students and expand their horizons in the ever-evolving fields of cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The workshop’s achievements reflect the dedication of our mentors and the enthusiasm of our participants, establishing a solid foundation for ongoing learning and development in AI and cloud technologies.
