Week 3: Operating Systems Security

Session Goal

To understand the basic security mechanisms and logging capabilities of major operating systems.

Concepts

• Windows Security: UAC, Defender, Firewall, Event Viewer.

• Linux Security: File Permissions, sudo, iptables/`ufw`, log locations.

Lab: Basic Log Analysis

Objective: Learn to find and interpret basic security logs on both Windows and Linux.

Tasks:

• Analyze Windows Security Event Logs for logon events.

• Search Linux authentication logs for SSH attempts.

Requirements: Access to a Windows & Linux VM.
