Introduction to Generative AI & LLMs

GDG on Campus KCA University - Nairobi, Kenya

In this session, I'll introduce Generative AI and how it powers text, image, and music generation. We'll explore how LLMs work, covering basic tokenization and training. Finally, we'll have a hands-on session, where we'll interact with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini APIs to see AI in action.

About this event

For the AI Chapter's first virtual session on Thursday, 6th February 2025, We will be covering Introduction to Generative AI & LLMs. This session will introduce participants to the foundational concepts of Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), and how they work. The session will be divided into three main sections:

1. What is Generative AI?

Understanding how AI can generate text, images, music, and more.

Exploring real-world applications of Generative AI, including AI-powered chatbots, AI-generated art, and AI-assisted music composition.

Examples of powerful generative AI models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Midjourney for images, and Jukebox for music.

2. How do Large Language Models (LLMs) Work?

Introduction to the basic principles behind LLMs.

Tokenization: How AI breaks down text into smaller parts for processing.

Training Process: Overview of how LLMs learn from large datasets, using deep learning techniques like transformers.

Understanding key concepts like context windows, attention mechanisms, and embeddings.

3. Hands-on Session: Playing with AI APIs

Live demo of how to interact with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini APIs.

Hands-on activities where participants will experiment with:

Text generation and completion.

Asking AI to summarize, translate, and rephrase content.

Comparing responses from different models to understand their strengths.

Practical implementation: Writing simple scripts to interact with AI models via API calls.

By the end of this session, participants will have a solid understanding of how Generative AI works, how LLMs process information, and how to use AI APIs in their own projects.
