About this event

The Google Cloud Next 2017 is the signature developer event from the Google Cloud team with over 200 sessions planned on topics related to Big Data & Machine Learning, Application Development, Infrastructure & Operations, Mobility & Devices, and Collaboration & Productivity.

Google Cloud Next happens March 8-10 in San Francisco, CA. The Google Cloud Next Extended 2017 event at GDG NYC is focused on bringing awareness and hands-on experience with some of these technologies to our local communities.

AGENDA: Note that the agenda may be updated after March 10 to reflect news/announcements from the Next 17 event.

4:30pm Pre-Event: Codelabs (Optional)

We have a limited number of codes for the Google Qwiklabs training. We would like to make these available to members who actually work on these codelabs.

With that in mind, we will prioritize giving them to you if you show up early and work on (at least a part) of the codelabs before the event.

Remaining codes will be either given away on a first-come-first-served basis or will be reserved for a future dedicated codelabs-workshop event.

If you attend this part of the event, please bring a laptop and power/charger and be prepared to work on code.

5:30pm Doors Open

6:00pm  Welcome.

Announcements from GDG NYC Organizers

We'll play a short recap of the Next 17 Keynote and share the highlights (announcements, resources & buzz) from the 3-day conference. If possible, we hope to have a Q&A with Google Cloud Team members.

6:30pm FEATURE TALK A:  Cloud Spanner by Jen Tong (Google Developer Advocate). Remote Speaker, via Hangout.

"Cloud Spanner is the first and only relational database service that is both strongly consistent and horizontally scalable.' With this statement Google effectively challenged the long-standing CAP theorem in computer science and led to heated discussions on what the implications of that were.

We are extremely grateful to Jen Tong (Google Dev Advocate from SF) for agreeing to do a live talk for us on Spanner over Google Hangout, and take Q&A after.

7:10pm TEASER TALKServerless Computing & Google Cloud by Bret McGowen (Google Cloud Dev  Advocate).

Serverless computing & Google Cloud Functions were one of the buzz-worthy topics at Cloud Next 2017. But what are the Serverless Computing options on Google Cloud and how do Google Cloud Functions work? Bret will do a short "teaser talk" on this topic and show us some demos.  Note: Bret will be doing a deeper-dive on this topic at our May event - this is just a preview. Also a chance for Q&A around any other Cloud topics of interest.

7:30pm FEATURE TALK B: "Machine learning as an API: accessing pre-trained ML models with one API call"

Speaker: Sara Robinson, Google Cloud Dev Advocate

Abstract: Think your business could make use of Google's machine learning expertise when it comes to powering and improving your business applications, but do you get stuck on building and training your own custom model? Google Cloud Platform (GCP) offers four APIs: Google Cloud Vision API, Cloud Speech API, Cloud Natural Language API, and Cloud Translation API. These APIs access pre-trained machine learning models with a single API call. In this session, we'll share an overview of each API. Then we'll dive into code with a live demo.

We are extremely lucky to have Sara join us to do her Cloud Next 17 talk live. Follow her on Twitter (@SRobTweets) for her fantastic series of articles that explore usage of these APIs with real-world data and applications.

8:30pm Survey & Wrap-Up:

While you take the event survey, we'll review key resources -- particularly codelabs and new APIs -- that were released at the event. We hope to do a codelab-driven event at a future date.

9:00pm Doors Close.

Swag: We have a limited number of these Cloud Next bottles to give away -- while supplies last :-)
