About this event

This workshop is not intended to undo centuries of bias and
discrimination but rather focuses on one small, but important,
action that each of us can take (and model for others). Change
is rarely accomplished in one sweep but rather in small, consistent
choices we make daily.
OUTCOME

groups to overcome cultural, social
and gender related issues by giving
them the tools to sharpen their selfpromotion skills
• Change social norms amongst women
and men by promoting and running
workshops in your organization for
colleagues, peers, clients and others
OBJECTIVES
• Address our own biases against

who vocally express their achievements
• Identify the challenges around “bragging”
• Increase levels of confidence and selfworth for everyone attending
• Identify and utilize power sources for
effective self-promotion

Agenda

Arrival	• Invite everyone to take a seat on arrival • Kick-off with a short round of introductions, starting with Myself and then everyone else (name, what they do, something they’re passionate about outside of work).
Intro & research	• Welcome everyone to the workshop and give a brief rundown of what to expect. • Don’t mention anything about the group exercise - i.e., that they will be sharing their achievements out loud, as this can cause people to feel anxious unnecessarily. • Share a few statistics and/or studies with your group (pick the most relevant) before starting an open discussion using the following questions (remembering to give examples from your own life first): • Do these statistics make sense? • Do you sometimes struggle with people who brag? • Do you have any
Writing exercise	• Ask everyone to write a statement beginning with “I am remarkable because...” (This is a perfect moment to mention that it’s not bragging if it’s based on facts). • Encourage your group to write about things that they either do or did vs. attributes - e.g., “I did something remarkable” vs. “I am remarkable because I am x, y, z”. • Let them know that all aspects of their life are relevant, personal and professional. • Share an example of one personal and one professional achievement. It’s best if your examples include the challenge and an explanation about how you overcame it. • Don’t mention that the next section includes sharing as it’s important everyone fills an entire page, even if it seems challenging
Individual exercise	• One by one, invite each person to join you at the front of the room and ask them to read out a few reasons why they are remarkable (if you’re short on time ask them to pick one professional and one personal). • Clap after every participant shares- a short clap goes a long way to help build confidence. • Ask everyone to start their statement with “I am remarkable because…”
Group discussion	• Start a discussion about the experience to 1) identify the biases within us and 2) talk about how can we overcome them. • Ask specific questions: How did writing them down make you feel? How did saying them out loud make you feel? How do you usually react when hearing people voice their accomplishments?” • Spark participation by inviting anyone who hasn’t contributed to the group discussion to voice their thoughts. • If there are men in the group, ask them how it made them feel and see if they would behave differently in the future.
Wrap-up & surveys	• Ask everyone to complete the post survey during the last few minutes of the session. • Finish by thanking everyone for their participation and encourage them to keep sharing their accomplishments with co-workers, friends and family. Afterall, practice makes perfect. • Collect everyone’s email address and also encourage them to connect as a group. • Send out the details of the post-workshop exercises (see below) to keep the conversation alive between you and everyone who attended. • Invite participants to join the #IamRemarkable LinkedIn group
