About this event

GDG Johannesburg and GDG Cape Town are teaming up to offer an exciting Android Things session!

Android Things is an extension of the Android platform for IoT and embedded devices, writing IoT apps has been made a lot easier using Android Things. In this workshop, we will first cover what Android Things is and some basic examples of how to use it and then we will go onto building a light powered by motion sensor. Then you will learn to build a motion sensing camera that will take images and send them to your phone.

IMPORTANT Prerequisites:

- Programming experience required (ie Java development experience or similar, ideally have done Android development before)

- You will just need to bring a laptop that has :

- Android Studio 3.0 beta 6 (or higher) installed on it. (See here for how to get the Android Studio preview)

- The laptop needs a USB A port on it (ie if you have a new MacBook you need to print an adapter).

Please note we will have Android Things kits and all the required peripherals needed for development.

You will be working in pairs as we have a limited number of kits available. As such, we are accepting a maximum of 30 attendees. Please only RSVP as attending if you are certain that you will be able to make it!

Light drinks and snacks will be provided.

For more context, we will be building this hackster.io project
