We're Back!

GDG Hants and Surrey returns with our first event since Covid lockdowns. It is a chance for everyone to catch up and to kick start our developer programme. It's an opportunity for you to help us to set the agenda for future Meetups and to be a part of the team, while also learning about Firebase applications. What's not to like?

We're being hosted at Dice Tower Cafe & Gaming (dice-tower.co.uk) an exciting new venue in at the Top of Town, Basingstoke. With a fully licensed bar and food menu, they can provide whatever you need, so we won't be providing free food and drink as we did in the past. Workshop: Create a chat and message board web app with Firebase

Learn how to create a real-time message board app using Firebase's Firestore. This is a guided coding walkthrough for which a little knowledge of HTML / Javascript would be helpful but not essential. No previous knowledge of Firebase is required.

You will learn:

How to set up Firebase

How to read and write from/to a Firestore database

How to create an app which updates in real time by listening for changes in the database

You will need:

A laptop with Visual Studio Code (or your favourite IDE)

Node.JS installed (https://nodejs.org/en/download/)

Firebase CLI (https://firebase.google.com/docs/cli) - we will guide you through this at the time, but in case of poor connectivity it could be beneficial to install it in advance
