About this event

“Building for Everyone” is focused on accessibility and inclusion in technology, with the mission to help developers incorporate accessibility best practices into their products, and to raise awareness about accessibility guidelines and tools. Many handicapped persons can benefit from technology but are not always able to use it in a comfortable way.

We invited two amazing developers to Die Kabine who will speak about accessibility and answer your questions about it.

Alexander will give an introductory talk about accessibility with Flutter. He is a Flutter enthusiast and co-head of Flutter Competency in EPAM, host of Mobile People Talks and Flutter Dev Podcast.

Sabrina Jodexnis is a web developer from Hamburg and always strives for a good usability for handicapped users.

She will talk about Accessible Images. The talk will be about the correct usage of ALT attributes, ARIA for pictures and special cases like diagrams and maps.

A picture says more than a thousand words, but how many words do you need to describe a picture?

As web developers, we try to make our websites as beautiful and understandable as possible for our users. We use images for decorations, to visualize topics, to illustrate stories, or show our newest products. There are already billions of images on the web, getting more every day.

But what would a website look like without any images? What information would we miss?

Let us look at cases where images are not visually seen and how people with disabilities, like screen reader users, experience a website with images.

This talk explains how to make images more accessible and is a deep dive into alternative text for images and more advanced topics like static maps, decorations, and diagrams. Different contexts, meanings, and types of images need different approaches to provide the best experience for users.

This event will be in-person only at Die Kabine, Königsworther Str. 37, 30167 Hannover. We will have some drinks and snacks. A kiosk is located directly across the street from the venue.
