Web APIs like Project Fugu have narrowed the gap between PWAs, hybrid apps, and native apps, though native apps maintained an edge in animations due to their APIs. While complex animations like container transforms were previously challenging for web apps, the new View Transition API and Scroll-Driven Animations now enable native-like animations primarily through CSS.

Thanks to the rapid development of web APIs (keyword project Fugu), the gap between Progressive Web Apps (PWA), hybrid development approaches, and native apps could be closed more and more. However, when it comes to animations, native apps have always been one step ahead, thanks to the availability of native animation APIs. Until now, complex animations such as container transforms were practically impossible to implement in web apps without immense effort. Thanks to the new View Transition API and Scroll-Driven Animations, this gap can now be closed. The best thing is that everything is done almost exclusively using CSS.
