1. Move your ML from GKE to Cloud Run! (or don't?) (Doreen Sacker & Héctor Otero Mediero)

The speakers:

Doreen and Héctor work as Data Scientists at Opinary. They hate to be confined to SQL queries and dashboards. That’s why they spend tireless hours reading up on the latest developments in NLP, not because they need it for work, but simply because they love transforming words into numbers. Eager to get their machine learning models not only to be precise but also fast and cost-effective, they often venture into the Data Engineering world and maintain their own computing resources.

The talk:

Saving computing costs, reducing your cluster maintenance, maybe even surviving without a Data Engineer in your team. Cloud Run promises all of this and more, but how is the reality of migrating from an already-running k8s cluster to serverless? Is it even worth it? Two inexperienced but eager Data Scientists will tell you what they think.

2. How we reduced our BigQuery bills with BI Engine capacity orchestration (Márton Kodok)

The speaker:

Márton is a frequent speaker at conferences, a Google Developer Expert, top user on StackOverflow with 195k reputation and technical software architect at REEA.net. He is an active contributor to open-source solutions like Beanstalkd console and Riak admin interface. Márton is an expert in cloud technologies, scalability, HA, serverless, Cloud Run, Vertex AI, and database systems like BigQuery, Redis, MySQL, and Elasticsearch. He is also a mentor and consultant for startups.

The talk:

This session will deliver best practices and recommendations for tuning BI Engine for your existing BigQuery workloads for cheaper and faster queries. Learn how we at REEA are orchestrating BI Engine reservations, on a 5TB dataset, considered small for BigQuery but with big cost savings and accelerated queries. We are going to address the top considerations when to turn on BI Engine, how to use cloud orchestration for making this an automatic process, and combined with BigQuery and Data Studio query complexity that might save precious development time, lower bills and speed up queries.
