Speaker: Travis DePuy, Product Evangelist xMatters
Travis DePuy is a Tinkerer of Things, Master of Hats and Father of Kitties. He is currently Head Product Evangelist at xMatters where he gets to talk to people about how they are doing Incident Management, DevOps notifications and anything else involving humans, processes and tools. Travis balances the stationary computer work with the fluid moving of Chen Taichi and is often found in the sun flowing the forms of the old ways.
Session: The 4 Golden Signals
Google's SRE Handbook lays out the 4 Golden Signals of monitoring a distributed application: Latency, Traffic, Errors and Saturation. Understanding the differences of these signals and how they relate to a system are critical for maximizing uptime of the system. This talk will go in-depth on each signal and review some of the common metrics used to measure the signal. We'll review some of the different applications in the marketplace and examples of how they monitor the signals. Then, we'll discuss alerting options and best practices, from pagers to push messages. When does it make sense to "page out"? When does it not make sense? We'll wrap up with a discussion around what happens after the push messages go out and the processes involved in resolving incidents.
