Talk Title: How to Simulate Friends & Influence Elections
Talk Summary: It's an unfortunate reality that bots are ubiquitous in our online lives in 2020 - but that doesn't mean we can't have fun with them. In this talk, I will discuss a project of mine where I combined data scraping, data science, and reverse engineering in order to invade a small message board with a bot army. My bots simulated existing users based on their post history while taking great care to hide their origin, leaving the community very confused - but also entertained. We will also briefly discuss how these sorts of techniques are scaled up in order to infiltrate broader online discussions, and the impact that this type of automation can have on society.
