6:30 pm Workshop - How To Give Great Tech Presentations

Derek Van Tonder | Chief software architecture @ 3 Dot Digital

One of the best ways to boost your career in tech is to give great presentations. The problem is that most tech professionals need more public speaking experience, but it's tough to get that experience alone. In this 30-minute workshop, you’ll learn how to give great tech presentations that will help you stand out from the crowd. We're going to start by inviting random audience members to give a 'silly' presentation on a random topic. This is a great tool to take the pressure off so you can focus on what matters - audience engagement, storytelling, and delivery. We'll then move on to more serious topics and you'll have the opportunity to practice your presentation skills in a safe and supportive environment. You'll also learn how to structure your presentation, how to engage your audience, and how to handle questions. This workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to improve their tech presentation skills, whether you're a beginner or an experienced speaker. You'll leave with the confidence and skills you need to give great tech presentations that will help you advance your career.

7:00 pm Do it all in Flutter/Dart: Mobile, Web & Server

Peter Effeney

For an independent developer, developing and maintaining all the components of a mobile solution can be challenging.

This presentation highlights the benefits and challenges of using Flutter/Dart to simplify and lighten the workload.

The case-study is “MapRun", a locally developed mobile app for adventure racing (cross-country running with map and compass).

It is used in 45 countries, in 10 languages, with 6,000-10,000 participants per month.

Peter is a retired IT executive who held roles as CEO and CIO of significant Queensland entities.

In retirement Peter is on Boards and Committees, but has also turned to hands-on development and maintenance of MapRun.
