This is the story of why and how the CDN serving Wikipedia uses a Go tool for log inspection and metrics gathering. We will see a silly bug that caused memory usage to constantly grow, the way the bug was tracked down with profiling (pprof) and dynamic instrumentation (SystemTap), as well as the fix.

David Cheney (@davecheney) is a software engineer at VMWare. David has been involved with the Go project for more than eight years. He is a regular contributor to the language, focusing on Go on ARM processors. Previously, he ported Go to FreeBSD/ARM and Solaris/AMD64 and is working on a port to Linux/ARM64. David writes frequently about Go on his blog and has spoken locally and internationally.

Emanuele Rocca was sysadmin in 2002, DevOps in 2010, SRE nowadays. While waiting for the next buzzword, I help running Wikipedia's production CDN. Member of the Debian Project for the past 16 years.
