About this event

Happy New Year GDG Atlanta Members! With a new year comes change and we are no different, as our meeting date and location have changed to the 3rd Wednesday of the Month at General Assembly, inside Ponce City Market. For our first meeting of the year we are happy to welcome Steve Bussey from Salesloft to talk about Elixir.

We ask everyone RSVP on the General Assembly Event page, in addition to this one, before the meeting. You will need to provide your email address to GA regardless in order to attend.

Talk:
"Real-time applications come with real challenges—persistent connections, multi-server deployment, and strict performance requirements are just a few. Don’t try to solve these challenges by yourself—use a framework that handles them for you. Elixir and Phoenix Channels provide a solid foundation on which to build stable and scalable real-time applications."

At GDG Atlanta, we'll look at how a real-time Elixir app works—from client to server. We'll cover all of the ins and outs. What does it mean to have a "real-time" web application? What communication layers can be used (WebSocket, SSE) and how are they used in real-time apps? How does a JavaScript client connect to the server? How does the Elixir server work, and what makes it great for real-time apps?

This session is a light primer to Elixir and the Erlang/OTP platform, so don't worry if you haven't coded in Elixir before.

About our Speaker:

He has written and led development on real-time Elixir applications that power critical features of business software. He is passionate about sharing Elixir due to the positive impact it has had on how he designs and writes applications."

"Google Developer Groups (GDGs) are for developers who are interested in Google's developer technology; everything from the Android, Chrome, Drive, and Google Cloud platforms, to product APIs like the Cast API, Maps API, and YouTube API. A GDG can take many forms -- from just a few people getting together to watch our latest video, to large gatherings with demos and tech talks, to events like code sprints and hackathons. However, at the core, GDGs are focused on developers and technical content, and the core audience should be developers."
