Root Insurance possesses one of the largest React Native codebases on earth and its native trip tracking solution has logged hundreds of millions of miles. On the surface, Root's Android app may appear to be "just another app" but the technology behind it is both interesting and distinctive. We'll walk through why Root switched to React Native, some basics, and why it works for us. We'll also talk about some of the challenges of working with Android while trying to detect every trip a user has taken.
I am a Columbus native. I grew up here and graduated from OSU. I love startups. I live for new ideas that are high risk, high reward. I’ve started a few companies that have failed and after that I discovered Root where I was the first employee. Software engineering is my passion and I enjoy teaching it to and sharing it with others.
I've spent my career focused on both FinTech and Startups in general. I started off working for a stock option trading firm at the Chicago Board of Options Exchange coming up with and optimizing their automated trading strategies. After that, I was the technical founder of 3 startups, most notably Dave, Inc where I served as Director of Technology for 2 years where I oversaw our transition from native Android and iOS to React Native. Now, I work at Root as an Android engineer on our Telematics team.
