About this event

Aboriginal English Voices is a partnership between Google and the University of Western Australia to improve Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) technologies. Products using these technologies often fail for Indigenous people in Australia who use a distinct variety of English known as Aboriginal English. In this talk, we introduce some of the features of Aboriginal English that distinguish it from mainstream Australian English, and present the results of Indigenous-led interviews which reveal frustrations by Aboriginal English speakers when using speech technologies. We then give an overview of an effort to make speech technologies more inclusive by building a dataset of spoken Aboriginal English.
