About this event

This event is part of the Google “Build with AI” series of events, which are community-led technical workshops or hackathons hosted by Google Developer Groups (GDG). These events aim to help developers learn and apply their skills on Generative AI trends and products from Google.

Throughout this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to engage in hands-on exercises, allowing you to apply the concepts you've learned in real-world scenarios. Whether you're a beginner seeking to explore the world of AI or an experienced professional looking to expand your skill set, this workshop will provide you with the knowledge and tools to succeed.

Here's the agenda for the day:

0. 09:00 - 10:00: Attendees Check-In & Tea/Coffee

As attendees show up and are checked in for the event, there will be pastries and tea/coffee to get us warm and ready for the day.

1. 10:00 - 10:15: GDG Cape Town Welcome Note

Get to know the event organisers and sponsors, as well as understand the theme of the day.

2. 10:15 - 11:10: [Keynote] Introduction to Generative AI, Google Gemini & Vertex AI. By Ngesa Marvin, John Kimani and James Mwai

Ngesa Marvin will introduce us to Generative AI, in general, while John Kimani will briefly walk us through Google's Gemini Generative AI solutions. James Mwai will then talk about other solutions in the suite of AI products from Google: Gemma and Vertex AI.

3. 11:10 - 11:25: Short break

Attendees will break into their preferred code-along sessions.

4. 11:25 - 12:30:  Instructor-led code-along sessions. The sessions will run in parallel in different sections of the venue:

  • Gemini for Python and NodeJS Codelab session, to be facilitated by Ngesa Marvin
  • Gemini on Google Cloud (a.k.a. VertexAI) session, to be facilitated by James Mwai
  • Gemini for Web Codelab session, to be facilitated by John Kimani
  • Gemini for Flutter and Android Native Mobile SDKs Codelab session, to be facilitated by Ugo Mmirikwe

5. 12:30 - 13:00: Lunch, Drinks & Networking


IMPORTANT NOTES

A few important points to note in order to effectively participate in this workshop:

  • Create your Google Developer Profile here if you haven’t done so already. We would update your Google Developer profile with badges and awards based on your participation in this workshop, which you can link to in your CV/resumé.
  • We will provide a stable Wifi and power connection.
  • Bring along a power extension box and/or adapter for your laptop to make sure you are able to plug in if your laptop’s battery start running low.
