As a final-year Computer Science student specializing in AI agent architectures and multimodal workflows (GSSoC '26 Rank #29), here are my thoughts on how the role of AI/ML Engineers will evolve by 2029:

1. Shift from Base Model Training to Agentic System Orchestration:

Engineers will spend less time training models from scratch and more time building reliable multi-agent systems, tool-use routing, and long-context state management.

2. Production AI Reliability & Guardrails:

Evaluating non-deterministic outputs, API contract validation, and automated safety guardrails will become as core as traditional software testing (STLC).

3. Edge AI & Lightweight Local Inference:

Small Speculative Models (SSMs) and privacy-first local inference on edge devices will dominate enterprise deployments over monolithic cloud endpoints.
