Great questions — as of 2026 there are two real "offline Gemini" paths.

Gemini Nano — actual Gemini running on-device. Newer Android phones ship it via AICore, and you reach it through the ML Kit GenAI / AI Edge SDKs. Inference is fully local, no network at runtime.

Gemma — Google's open-weights family. Run Gemma 3 locally with Ollama or llama.cpp on desktop/server, or on-device via MediaPipe's LLM Inference API (Android/iOS/web). With a LoRA fine-tune it makes a surprisingly capable domain chatbot.

Architecture tips that have held up for me: keep the model behind one swappable interface (cloud Gemini when online, local Gemma offline), persist chat state in SQLite, and for offline RAG pair a small local embedding model with sqlite-vec.

Timely for the 305: GDG on Campus FIU is running "Build with Gemma: 305 HackFiesta" virtually through Aug 31 — a perfect excuse to prototype exactly this.
