Reflecting back on the past few weeks, what have been your biggest hurdles as a beginner diving into AI technology for environmental solutions? How did you overcome them, and what advice would you lend to someone just starting out on a similar path?

Great to see you at the event today, Binta! Reflecting on that question, my journey shifted from seeing AI as an abstract tool to using it as a partner in coastal resilience and social equity.
As I transitioned from my background in sociology and instructional design into my work with Technovation, my biggest hurdle was learning how to design human-centered AI workflows that address real-world problems. I stopped getting caught up in the technical syntax and started focusing on community impact and environmental sustainability.
For anyone starting out, here is what helped me:
Lean into your expertise: Do not feel like you have to abandon your background. Use AI to amplify what you already know rather than replacing it.
Focus on the workflow: I rely on tools like Canva, Descript, and Google AI Studio to iterate faster on research and advocacy. Find the tools that make your specific process more efficient.
Find your community: Joining the GDG ecosystem allowed me to share ideas and collaborate with mentors. Having a space to test concepts helped me overcome the initial imposter phase.
Keep showing up and keep building. The bridge between complex AI and community-based solutions is where the most important work happens!
