The Pre-DevFest Virtual Series serves as the technical runway to DevFest Umuahia 2026 (holding November 21, 2026, at Abia Mall). In October, our community gathers online to explore advanced engineering concepts, cloud architectures, AI workflows, and practical software design.

Session Description

AI has changed the way we build software. With AI coding assistants and agentic development tools, developers can move from an idea to a working application faster than ever. But getting an application to work is not the same as understanding it, owning it, or being able to scale it.

“Beyond Vibes” is about moving past the excitement of AI-generated applications and developing with intention.

In this session, we’ll explore how developers can use AI as a powerful development partner while still taking ownership of the applications they build. We’ll look at how to start with a clear understanding of the problem, make deliberate architectural decisions, use AI to accelerate implementation, and critically review and understand the code and systems AI helps produce.

We’ll also explore what it takes to build applications that can grow beyond the initial prototype, covering practical considerations such as application architecture, APIs, databases, performance, caching, background processing, security, testing, observability, deployment, and designing for increasing users and traffic.

The goal is not to build without AI, but to build with AI while retaining the engineering judgment needed to understand, maintain, secure, and scale the software.

Because AI can help you generate an application quickly, but you are still responsible for making sure the application actually works when the vibes wear off and real users show up.

By the end of this session, attendees will:

1. Learn how to use AI effectively throughout the development process while maintaining a clear understanding and ownership of the code and architecture it produces.

2. Understand the key decisions behind scalable applications, including API design, database architecture, caching, background processing, performance, security, testing, and observability.

3. Learn how to move from an AI-generated prototype to a production-ready application by applying intentional engineering practices, validating AI-generated solutions, and designing for growth from the beginning.
