Theme: Demystifying Web Infrastructure for All Students
Duration: 60–90 Minutes
2. OBJECTIVES
This seminar aims to provide a high-level yet practical understanding of the
invisible systems that power the daily web experience. The goal is to move beyond
"browsing" and understand "infrastructure," specifically focusing on security and
reliability.
Explain the journey of a request from browser to server.
Differentiate between secure (HTTPS) and insecure (HTTP) communications.
Showcase Google Cloud Platform (GCP) tools as a diagnostic window into
the web.
Empower non-CS students to identify safe vs. malicious sites.
3. KEY DISCUSSION POINTS
•DNS - The Phonebook of the Internet: How domain names translate to IP
addresses and why DNS hijacking is a risk.
•HTTP vs. HTTPS: The anatomy of an encrypted connection and the role of SSL/TLS certificates.
•GCP Visual Demo: Using Cloud Console tools to view site health, load
balancing, and certificate status.
•Visual Trust: A side-by-side comparison of site security indicators in modern
browsers.
4. IMPACT & VALUE
As a GDGOC event, this session strengthens the university's technical culture by
making complex topics accessible. It positions the Google Developer Group as a
bridge between professional cloud tools and student curiosity.
