About this event

1. Executive Summary

Gamefest is a two-phase hybrid gaming event that transitions from wide-scale online qualifiers to a high-energy physical finale. Moving away from traditional lab-based eliminations, this format uses the School of Computer Science Auditorium as a centralized "Waiting and Watching Zone," where the audience and participants are one and the same to ensure a "packed" atmosphere.

2. Event Structure

Phase 1: Online Open Qualifier

  • To ensure technical stability and high-stakes competition, we are using a Double-Filter Parallel Model:

    • Initial Capacity: Registration is capped at 128 participants.

  • Tier 1 (The Initial Cut):

    • 128 players are split into 4 parallel rooms (32 players each).

    • Each room plays 3 rounds of Free-For-All (FFA).

    • The Top 16 from each room advance to the next stage (64 players remain).

  • Tier 2 (The Final Cut):

    • 64 players are split into 2 parallel rooms (32 players each).

    • Each room plays 3 rounds of FFA.

    • The Top 16 from each room earn their spot for the physical event (32 finalists remain).

Phase 2: Physical D-Day (The Auditorium Model)

The physical event focuses on a recursive group-stage format to ensure "zero dead air" and constant crowd engagement.

  • The Venue: The Auditorium (Capacity: ~120) serves as the main stage and spectator hub.

  • Group Stage Mechanics:

    • The 32 participants are divided into 4 groups of 8 players each.

    • Each group competes in 3 recursive rounds on the main stage.

    • Remaining participants watch the live-projected gameplay from the auditorium seats, maintaining a high-energy "theater" vibe.

  • Scoring System:

    • Points are awarded based on rank in each round: 1st (8 marks), 2nd (7 marks), down to 8th (1 mark).

    • The Top 2 players with the highest total marks from each group (8 players total) qualify for the Grand Finals.

3. Side Events & Engagement

To maintain momentum during transitions and the rest period, three side booths will operate in the foyer:

  • Monkeytype Challenge: A "Bring Your Own Board" (BYOB) typing station with a live WPM leaderboard.

  • Dinosaur Game: A high-score challenge using the classic Chrome offline game.

  • Jackbox Games: A large-scale crowd game hosted during the lunch break to engage the entire audience via their mobile devices.
