About this event

As part of its continuous technical empowerment initiatives, GDG OnCampus REC successfully hosted an interactive hands-on workshop titled "From Curiosity to Creation – The Future of Things (Part 2)," introducing participants to advanced Internet of Things (IoT) hardware and real-world automation concepts. Designed as a seamless continuation of the introductory track, this practical session brought together students across all batches to build smarter connected systems and simulate hardware setups using modern virtual prototyping tools.

Workshop Objectives

The primary goal of this workshop was to bridge foundational concepts with physical application, equipping students with actionable skills in microcontroller architecture, circuit simulation, and sensor integration. Participants gained hands-on experience using the ESP32 microcontroller and component logic to design automated, real-world smart systems from scratch.

Structure of the Workshop

  1. Recap & Introduction to Advanced IoT Hardware

The workshop kicked off with a brief catch-up session ensuring all participants, including first-time attendees, were up to speed. Speakers introduced the architecture of advanced IoT hardware, highlighting how modern microcontrollers bridge the gap between software logic and physical actions.

  2. Exploring the ESP32 Microcontroller

Participants took a deep dive into the features of the ESP32 board, recognized as the "brain" of scalable smart devices.

    The session covered:

  • ESP32 Architecture: Understanding pin configurations, processing power, and onboard Wi-Fi/Bluetooth capabilities.

  • Sensors & Input Logic: Interfacing environmental sensors and switches to collect live physical data.

  • Actuators & Controls: Controlling relays and high-power components to execute automated physical actions.

  1. Circuit Simulation using Wokwi

Students engaged in practical circuit design using Wokwi, an advanced online IoT simulator. Attendees wired virtual components, programmed logic for the ESP32 board, and tested real-time signal processing without hardware limitations.

  2. Real-World Automation Concepts & Guided Building

The session culminated in a guided build segment where participants structured functional IoT automation logic. Students designed simulated automation systems—such as automated relay triggers, sensor-driven switch controls, and smart monitoring loops—mirroring industrial and smart-home applications.

  3. Troubleshooting & Live Demonstrations

The workshop concluded with interactive debugging and project validation. Attendees tested their code logic, resolved common circuit simulation errors, and saw live demonstrations of how these concepts scale into complex physical deployments.
