Google Code Craft is a beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop organized by GDGoC MITS-DU for first-year students. The workshop introduces students to Generative AI and basic web development by building a real working application, rather than teaching AI only through theory.
The workshop follows a problem → idea → build → test → customize approach.
Students will build Study Mate, an AI-powered web application that acts as a personal academic study assistant.
It will allow students to:
Ask & Explain: Ask academic questions and receive explanations.
Choose Difficulty: Get Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced explanations.
Generate MCQs: Create practice questions from a topic.
Create Revision Plans: Generate personalized study and revision plans.
Code Explainer: Paste simple code and receive an easy-to-understand explanation.
The workshop keeps the technology stack intentionally simple:
Gemini + Google AI Studio + HTML + CSS + JavaScript
Students will understand the basic flow:
Student → Web Interface → JavaScript → Gemini API → AI Response → Study Mate
The focus is on understanding what an API is, how an application sends a request, receives a response, and displays the result.
Students begin by identifying a common academic problem:
(Students need help understanding concepts, practising questions, and planning revision.)
They then use Gemini to explore the solution and design Study Mate. After that, they progressively build the interface, connect Gemini, understand API communication, and add features.
Academic Problem → Idea → Study Mate → UI → Gemini Integration → API Communication → Features → Customization
By the end of Google Code Craft, students will have:
Built a functioning AI-powered web application.
Used Google AI Studio and Gemini.
Understood the basic concept of an API.
Used JavaScript fetch() to communicate with an API.
Understood basic request, response, and JSON concepts.
Learned how prompts influence AI output.
Experienced the process of turning an idea into a working application.
Customized their own version of Study Mate.
