From Localhost to Live: Free Deployment for Every Stack

Session Overview:

The session addressed the common gap between local development and production deployment. The primary objective was to equip students with a "Free Tier" stack suitable for hackathons and final-year projects, ensuring they can take any component of their application live without cost.

Topics Covered:

Frontend Hosting Strategies:
• Demonstrated the transition from local folders to instant static hosting.
• Compared key platforms: Netlify (for drag-and-drop simplicity), Vercel (for Next.js/React optimization), and GitHub Pages (for portfolio integration).

Backend & Dynamic Hosting:
• Explored free compute providers including Render and PythonAnywhere.
• Addressed technical constraints such as "sleeping servers" (cold starts) on Render.
• Explained the critical concept of ephemeral filesystems—teaching students why they cannot save files permanently to the server disk on free tiers.

Database Management & Persistence:
• SQL vs. NoSQL: Compared Supabase (PostgreSQL) for structured relational data versus Firebase Firestore (NoSQL) for high-speed, real-time applications.
• Firebase Deep Dive: Provided a step-by-step walkthrough on creating a Firebase project, setting up Firestore in "Test Mode," and generating/managing API credentials (service accounts) for secure connection.

AI/ML Integration (Session Highlight):
• Addressed the challenge of hosting heavy models that require significant RAM (e.g., PyTorch/TensorFlow).
• Demonstrated the "Golden Stack" for AI: Using Hugging Face Spaces to host the model and Streamlit to create the interface, effectively bypassing the crash risks associated with standard free web servers.

Outcome: Students now have a clear, actionable roadmap to deploy Frontend, Backend, Database, and AI components independently using free, industry-standard tools.
