Welcome to this week's hands-on session! Detecting fraudulent transactions across millions of payment records requires algorithms that handle tabular complexity, class imbalance, and non-linear interactions without falling victim to overfitting. In this workshop, we will train and evaluate an enterprise-grade Distributed Random Forest model using Google's Data Agent Kit inside the Antigravity IDE alongside BigQuery ML and distributed cloud compute.
You will see firsthand how agentic tooling assists across the entire machine learning lifecycle—from feature selection and hyperparameter exploration to distributed model training, evaluation, and explainability.
We will step through an end-to-end distributed ML training and inference workflow:
Feature Store Selection & Preprocessing: Direct the Data Agent Kit to inspect curated transaction marts in BigQuery, identifying predictive signals such as rolling velocity aggregates, device risk scores, and geographic distance hops.
Handling Severe Class Imbalance: Implement sampling strategies and configure class weight parameters (AUTO_CLASS_WEIGHTS) within SQL models to account for the heavy asymmetry between legitimate and fraudulent transactions.
Distributed Model Architecture (RANDOM_FOREST_CLASSIFIER): Prompt the agent to construct and execute distributed Random Forest training specifications natively in BigQuery ML, setting tree depth, number of parallel estimators, subsampling rates, and split criteria across distributed workers.
Agent-Guided Evaluation & Metric Optimization: Use the agent to run ML.EVALUATE and ML.ROC_CURVE, analyzing Precision-Recall AUC, False Positive Rates, and F1 scores rather than misleading raw accuracy metrics.
Model Explainability & Feature Importance: Extract global and local feature attributions using ML.GLOBAL_EXPLAIN and feature importance matrices to verify why specific transactions triggered high fraud probabilities.
Batch Scoring & Real-Time Decisioning: Deploy the trained model to generate fraud probability scores on live incoming batches, setting dynamic decision thresholds for instant approval, step-up verification, or auto-decline.
Distributed Compute at Scale: Train ensemble models over millions of rows natively inside BigQuery without moving sensitive financial data into memory-constrained local Python runtimes.
Agentic ML Workflows: Accelerate model iteration, SQL syntax generation, and metric interpretation using the Data Agent Kit directly inside your development environment.
Explainable AI for Risk Compliance: Learn how tree-based feature importance satisfies regulatory demands by explaining the exact signals driving automated fraud flags.
High-Impact Portfolio Proof-of-Work: Demonstrating distributed classification, class-imbalance mitigation, and model explainability highlights senior-level data science and cloud ML competency.
