Welcome to this week’s hands-on build! High-throughput financial systems generate massive streams of raw, semi-structured telemetry—API gateway requests, authorization attempts, and mobile events. In this practical session, we will build a scalable ingestion and preprocessing engine using Dataproc Serverless for Apache Spark on Google Cloud to parse, enrich, and stream raw security logs directly into BigQuery for downstream fraud detection.
You will learn how to process massive log files at cloud scale without provisioning, tuning, or maintaining persistent Spark clusters.
We will step through building an enterprise-grade, serverless data processing pipeline:
Raw Ingestion & Storage Architecture: Ingest high-volume raw JSON and NDJSON event logs landing in Cloud Storage (GCS), structuring partitions by event timestamp and source service.
PySpark Batch Processing on Serverless: Write and package PySpark jobs to parse nested schemas, flatten complex payload attributes, filter malformed log lines, and anonymize sensitive PII (Personally Identifiable Information).
Feature Enrichment at Scale: Calculate real-time velocity metrics (e.g., failed authorization counts per IP window, rapid geo-distance shifts) using Spark SQL window functions and distributed aggregations.
Serverless Orchestration via Dataproc Batches: Submit and run PySpark workloads using Dataproc Serverless (gcloud dataproc batches submit pyspark), configuring autoscaling executors and resource limits with zero cluster setup.
Direct BigQuery Integration: Stream transformed, analytics-ready fraud features directly into partitioned and clustered BigQuery tables, ready for immediate anomaly detection modeling and security dashboarding.
Zero Infrastructure Overhead: Dataproc Serverless dynamically scales compute resources for the workload duration and terminates instantly upon job completion—no idle cluster costs.
Large-Scale Semi-Structured Parsing: Master handling complex, deeply nested JSON log formats that traditional relational loaders struggle to process efficiently.
Production-Ready Risk Features: Prepare clean, enriched, and windowed transaction logs that serve as the foundation for real-time fraud classification and rule-based alerts.
Enterprise Portfolio Asset: Demonstrating a serverless PySpark architecture feeding into BigQuery showcases cloud-scale data engineering capability essential for enterprise data platforms.
