Indexes Aren't Magic: Mental Models for Scaling
Databases are fast enough nowadays that most engineers don't need a strong mental model for database performance and indexing until a site starts scaling quickly and that knowledge becomes essential.
When COVID hit ClassDojo, traffic increased 5x overnight, and a strong mental model for database performance helped the team know exactly which indexes to add to address performance problems.
In this talk, Will will build intuition for index behavior and performance by starting with the world's worst in-memory index. From there, he'll explore thin-memory indexes and cover common indexing misconceptions.
